In spite
of getting together some months before to start playing their instruments,
only in January 1997 GoldenPyre were officially created. The search for
the right name took some months until all the elements agreed on GoldenPyre
as the band's identification. The name is very enigmatic and apparently
senseless but it contains all the terror and power that a pyre reveals
along with the fascination that gold has always aroused on man since the
most ancient times. As far as sonority is concerned, in the beginning
there were some doubts about which way to go but soon their minds were
focused on Death Metal and many fast and brutal or heavy and melodious
riffs started to appear. At that time there was a myriad of influences
and the players were rather immature but many tunes were composed that
had been improved and arranged in a pleasant way.
: With 5 original songs in their set, the first presentations were prepared
and the first gig happened in November 1997, in Vigo (Spain) along with
the French Horresco Referens and the Spanish Embrace me Ocean. On the
following months other gigs happened in Guimarães, Vila Nova de
Gaia, Barroselas and Oporto with bands as Agonizing Terror, Winter Cry
or Dismal and although some bad luck and much inexperience on stage, the
band had a good reception from the audience, had the opportunity to hear
different reactions and to try some new songs in a more brutal and aggressive
style. This brings them to a point where a recording was absolutely necessary
in order to present the work to a bigger audience so the edition of their
presentation demo started.
: In August 1998 the 5 first original songs of the band are recorded in
the "Apocryphal" demo. Their songs are in an undeniable Death
Metal style, changing between the violent guitar assaults and blast beats
and more melancholic moments with strong bass cadences and majestic vocals.
All the demo tape is conceptual, it is based on legends and ancestral
tales settled in all civilizations' minds whose authenticity is many times
argued... in a word "Apocryphal"!!! It was the band's intention
to present to their listeners just the enough so they can take their own
interpretations, stating in their lyrics only what is written, what has
passed through generations... it is warned that both interpretation and
credibility of the lyrics depend on the listener and that the members
of the band are not trying to prophesy some theory... we leave the messiah's
part to the dreaming philosophers!!!
The band tried really hard to release a quality work, choosing the Fussion
Studios in Vigo (Spain) to record their demo because of the good relationship
with local bands that have recorded there and had great results and also
to avoid the production and edition stagnation related to underground
music in Portugal... and the result couldn't be better!!! A quality sound
and an exceptional production with some refinement made the GoldenPyre
sonority more distinct and harmonious. Also all the details were particularly
arranged and all the promotion work was made with great care to reach
the highest number of people and to produce a strong first impact with
the band.
: After the demo edition, the band continued improving their sound, developing
in a more aggressive and brutal way, marking even more their Death Metal
roots... songs like "Mourning Relief" or "Corrosion Of
Future" are ready to be recorded and they show perfectly well all
the band's evolution and all the actual GoldenPyre power!!!
: Due to the tremendous incompatibility in terms of rehearsing and concerts
on the part of the vocalist Filipe and his contribution to Immortal Throne
(in which he was the vocalist and lyric-writer), he decided to leave GoldenPyre...
His decision was accepted very peacefully, once his participation in GoldenPyre
was never considered definite. The band immediately searched for a new
member. And thus, in middle July '99 and after several contacts, a new
vocalist, Ricardo Pereira (more known as 'Fred') was recruited. Under
this line-up, regular rehearsals and also live performances were retaken.
Until... after an alcoholically brutal and devastating concert at Santa
Marta de Penaguião, with Thanatos and Firstborn Evil, the guitarist
Gil Cruz decides to leave the band due to lack of compatibility with the
family.... GoldenPyre is thus deprived of one of the founder members and
of one of its 'creative souls'. But his place would soon be reoccupied
so that the concerts coming nigh (with Marduk & AngelCorpse and Halloween
Tour '99) would take place.
: A replacement was found almost immediately Paulo, by request of the
vocalist Fred, due to other projects in which both had previously been
involved.... So, the line-up at this time was: Paulo 'Canha' Lima (bass),
Tiago Veiga (guitar), Ricardo Veiga (drums), Ricardo 'Fred' Pereira (vocals)
and Paulo Morais (guitar). Already with this renewed line-up, the rehearsals
start in September '99 and 4 tracks are prepared for the band's live presentation
on October 20th, with Marduk & AngelCorpse.... The concert was a perfect
demonstration of GoldenPyre's real power live and of each new member's
perfect adaptation to the band in their share of the work. However, due
to time restrictions on the part of the Tour manager, the band saw itself
forced to play before the scheduled time and few were those who actually
saw such devastation!!!
: There was barely time to rest or to make a flashback at the concert,
because a week later, the Halloween Tour '99 began, featuring In Tha Umbra,
Theriomorphic and Holocausto Canibal, which would go through Figueira
da Foz, Lisboa, Porto, Braga and other such places...
The whole Tour was a tremendous success, even though Holocausto Canibal
have not played the first three gigs, either because their drummer João
was unable to go, or because there was not much audience at Porto's gig.
Everything was variable during the four days of the Tour, from the quality
of the concert rooms, to the bands' performances or the public adherence,
but the spirit of friendship and fun between the bands was dominant and
indeed, that leaves us looking forward for new experiences of the genre...
Hail to the Underground!!!
: During the year 2000, GoldenPyre continued their live shows, from which
we can point out the one in Steel Warriors` Rebellion - Barroselas Metalfest,
among names such as Sinister, Purgatory, Aborted, Pandemia and many more...this
was one of the last shows given by the bass player, Paulo Lima, who, due
to personal reasons, had to leave the band, being immediately replaced
by Ricardo "Caneco" Pires, that is also Immortal Throne`s bassist
at the time.
: After the successful tour with Holocausto Canibal and Corpus Christii,
which took GoldenPyre to spanish territory once again, they decided that
it was time to record their new material...Grave Studio was the chosen
place and with the help of the producer Pedro "Mano" Alves,
GoldenPyre recorded their second Demo-Tape entitled "necroTERRORism",
composed by 4 songs ("Mourning Relief", "Filthy Potion",
"Corrosion of Future" and "Mesmerising Aphrodite").
: After some shows during October 2001 with spanish friends Wormed and
polish cult act Behemoth, Paulo and Fred left the band... a month later
Ricardo Coutinho (ex Immortal Throne) joins the band as new guitarist
and Fred returns to the vocals.
: On 18th and 19th May 2002 the band played in the SWR - barroselas metalfest
along with bands like Pungent Stench, Aborted, Akercocke, Scarve, Rottenness,
Impedigon, Infernal, Imperious Malevolence and many others. About one
month after the band entered the studio to pre-produce 6 new tracks and
an intro ("Invoke The Beast") to be included in the previously
titled debut mCD "decrepidemic". The titles of the tracks are
"Flagellation", "Lead The Rats", "Devoured By
Pain", "Dies Irae", "Acrescentum" and "Cadant
In Obscurum". The recordings took place in Grave Studios in June
and the pre-production was supposed to be complete in August. Due to some
delays the pre-production would just be ready in October.
: During the summer the band travelled to Wacken (in Germany), where they
met some friends and then followed to East where they played some shows
in Poland and Czech Republic with friends Perverse and Pandemia. During
the fall the band continued the pre-production of "decrepidemic",
rehearsed and prepared 4 new tracks ("Crawl To The Abyss", "Nailed
In The Eyes", "Onward To Damnation" and "Exterminate")
to be included in a 4 way split CD and played lots of shows, mainly in
Portugal and Spain, with bands like Behemoth, Diabolic, Destroyer 666,
In Tha Umbra, Web and some others...
