EBOLA JOY
band was founded in July 1997. Ale "AL" Weizer (keyboard,
vocals) and Jirí "YORK" Réda (guitar), who brought
in this unusual name including the logo graphics, were the founder members
of the group. It was very hard to find more members in the place of their
residence Znojmo South Moravian town, known mainly for wine
and cucumbers. So purchase of an automatic drummer was one of the first
common decisions to reach a rock band image.
Al provided a studio that was strange enough to aspire to be the worlds
rarity as probably there has never been anybody else who would rehearse
in a wine cellar. The band started to practice playing first pieces and
at the same time they were looking intensively for a suitable female singer.
After several prolonged troubles York brought his friend Dana Müllerová
and the originally intended team was suddenly complete. Since the beginning
the band has been playing their own original songs only and they call
their hardly classifiable style dark electronic music.
In October 1998 EBOLA JOY shut themselves in the studio and thanks to
great help of Josef Giuseppe Jelínek a famous local rocker
who was attending the mix they recorded their debut CD demo: Give
Me a Medicine. The result exceeded all expectations although the
recording was carried out as a live recording on an old 4track tape recorder
without a possibility to do any adjustments or changes afterwards
.
Professionals reviews admired good quality of the sound that was
made in truly amateur conditions. The reviews were positive and this was
a splendid beginning for the EBOLA JOY (see the section: Reviews). There
was also a long article about the band in the rock magazine Whiplash.
The band made a mistake by concentrating only on reviews in rock magazines
and they did almost nothing about their debut promotion that wasnt
supported by concert activity either. The demo was evaluated only by national
periodicals and it was too little as the future later revealed. The members
themselves financed all activities and it might have been the reason why
the excitement about the debut CD has faded out too fast. As a result
of all that there were only a few encouraging reviews and several concerts
in Znojmo. On the top of it the singer Dana left the band as her troubles
with vocal cords overgrew the tolerable bound.
In April 1999 York found an efficient substitute woman singer. Iva Doválelová
became a member of the band very quickly and she was very successful at
her debut concert - Hostim Woodstock. Immediately after that the band
started recording the next CD. York squeezed money out of his wallet and
together with a sponsor contribution made by Mrs Hana Becková (
the director of the art agency Quo Vadis and the Lady of the year 99-00)
the band was able to set out for a regular recording in a studio owned
by a friend Milan Sabo.
This way EBOLA JOY could release the second CD from the MS AUDIO studio
in Stemberk in September 1999. The CD ..in the name of their god
comprises of 13 pieces and all of them were recorded in a digital way.
Even though the MS AUDIO wasnt one of the professional studios at
all, this enterprise reached a very presentable quality that was later
manifested in the reviews. There was one paradoxical fact in spite
of the reviews where Iva was praised for her singing the rest of the band
broke away from her right after the recording was finished.
(York: We cannot accept compromises where we dont have to. It simply
couldnt work like that any more we were just dragging our feet.
We will use the vocal only in the studio and as soon as there is an excellent
singer available we will grasp her.)
The band used the potential of Internet this time and so the CD made it
far way off indeed. (see the enclosure) Since the budged was rather limited
it wasnt possible to carry out any more extensive distribution.
The response of home and mostly foreign periodicals was very positive,
encouraging and overran all expectations. Appreciation that the band received
for this CD, for example in Germany (DURP, AMBOSS, VAMPSTER
) could
be a matter of envy for other national bands. This way the band engraved
in minds of fans especially the foreign ones thanks to their originality
and own clean-cut style. Drop here and drop there but no real rain (how
typical for the Znojmo region climate
) EBOLA JOY has received several
interesting offers from Denmark, Belgium, Germany or Portugal but all
activities were financially unbearable at particular circumstances. Unfortunately
the successful second CD didnt move them more distinctively to rock
stages either. Absence of a manager or production agency and last but
not least a sponsor was more than striking.
In 2000 EBOLA JOY prepared material for the third CD but there was no
recording this time. All accessible finances were gone because of the
improvement of technical equipment (guitar apparatus upgrade, new sequencer,
change to wireless transmission transmitters etc.). While the band
kept on playing several concerts, while there were new reviews and acceptances
from all over the world coming
all the same the band members themselves
were very disappointed.
York: Well, there have been enough super splendid reviews, a long
interview in the CASSIOPEIA magazine was published, they played our songs
in Mexican, Greek and American radios but otherwise nothing else was happening.
There was no interesting offer from anybody
I am still an optimist
but it has cost me a fortune and I am sometimes in a bad mood from all
that
The beginning of the year 2000 didnt bring any improvement either.
The band enlarged their repertory up to respectable number of 35 pieces
and refined the material for the third CD but still there is a frustration
and spleen among the members. All of a sudden there came an offer from
a guitar player, singer, composer, producer and owner of a recording studio..
from Milo D.O. Doleal (ex-Vitacit, Praský Výber,
Guy Man Dude Band, Zemetresení).
This was a real encouragement as everybody knows that Milos is choosy
and doesnt abound in offers. Shortly after that it came to the first
cooperation and EBOLA JOY presented themselves by their version of Klavier
on a tribute German CD of todays already megastar RAMMSTEIN.
CD was issued in the beginning of the year (02/02) in the recording company
DWELL Records in California. There were several bands from the CR, Austria
and America on this CD.
During the year 2002 the band has had several concerts on the territory
of the CR and they have earned a considerate admiration for their presentation.
For example, at the All Metal Festival in Olomouc local fans and organizers
evaluated their performance as one of the best ever played at the place.
They were given a similar evaluation among others in Trebic, Jihlava or
Chrudim.
In March EBOLA JOY had a presentation in a local broadcasting program
of the TV FATEM where the viewers could see a short recording from their
concert in Znojmo including a brief interview.
Here we should also mention considerably good reviews of the CD "BATTERY"
- A Tribute to Rammstein, because almost in all cases EBOLA JOY was evaluated
as a definite leader of this tribute for their version of the song Klavier.
